If you accept my words....
If you call out for insight...
If you look for it as silver..
Then you will understand the fear of the Lord
you will find the knowledge of God.
for He guards the course of the just
and protects the way of his faithful ones.
Wisdom will enter your heart
Discretion will protect you
Understanding will guard you.
Wow!!! It is conditional. If you accept, if you call out, if you look for Wisdom, then you will understand; God will guard and protect you.
But look at what happens if you do not accept wisdom and discipline from Proverbs 1:
Since you ignored all of my advice.....
I will laugh at your disaster
I will not answer
you will not find me
you will eat the fruit of your ways
It is a choice. It is one of life's major decisions. Do you seek the wisdom of God, or do you ignore His advice? Do you want God to protect you, or will He laugh at your disaster?
The Life Application Bible Commentary states:
2:3-6 Wisdom comes in two ways: It is a God given gift and also the result of energetic search. Wisdom's starting point is God's revealed Word, the "source of knowledge and understanding". But God gives it only to those who earnestly seek it; God's wisdom is hidden from the rebellious and foolish (non-believers). It takes effort to find it an use it. God will guide us and reward our sincere and persistent search.
2:9-10 We gain wisdom from a constant process of growing. First, we must trust and honor God. Trust God each day; honor God with each breathe. Second, we must realize that the Bible reveals God's wisdom to us. We must study it. Third, we must make a life long series of right choices and avoid moral pitfalls. Fourth, when we make sinful or mistaken choices, we must learn from our errors and recover. People do not develop all aspects of wisdom at once. For example, some people have more insight than discretion; other have more knowledge than common sense. But we can pray for all aspects of wisdom and take steps to develop them in our lives.
2:11 Discretion is the ability to tell right from wrong. It enables the believer to detect evil motives in men.
2:16-17 Two of the most difficult sins to resist are pride and sexual immorality. Both are seductive. Pride says "I deserve it"; sexual desire says, "I need it". In combination, their appeal is deadly. In fact, says Solomon only by relying on God's strength can we overcome them. Pride appeals to the empty head; sexual enticement to the empty heart. By looking to God, we can fill our heads with His wisdom and our hearts with His love. Ask God for strength to resist these temptations."
